South Yorkshire Tradespeople: What to Do About Back Pain

Back pain is rife among tradespeople across South Yorkshire. Here's why it happens and what actually helps.

Back pain comes with the job. That's what most tradespeople tell themselves. And for a while, that attitude gets you through. But "getting through" isn't the same as being fine - and most of the lads and lasses I see on my table have been grinding through pain for months before they finally book in.

I'm a sports massage therapist based in Treeton, just off the Sheffield Parkway between Rotherham and Sheffield. A good chunk of my clients are tradespeople - plasterers, electricians, joiners, roofers - people who use their bodies hard every single day. And the back pain I see in manual workers is some of the most persistent, layered-in tension I work with.

Here's the thing nobody says out loud: it doesn't have to be this way.

Why Tradespeople Get Back Pain More Than Most People

Manual work is repetitive. You're lifting, twisting, crouching, reaching - often in awkward positions for hours at a stretch. The body adapts to what you do most, and for a lot of tradespeople that means chronically tight hip flexors, locked-up lower backs, and upper traps that feel like concrete by Thursday.

It's not weakness. It's load. You're putting more through your body in a single working week than most office workers manage in a month. Without any recovery built in, the tension compounds. Week after week. Year after year.

I see plasterers with one side of their back noticeably tighter than the other - years of reaching with a dominant arm will do that. I see roofers whose thoracic spine is so stiff they can barely rotate their upper body. Joiners hunched from years of bench work. The pattern is always the same: overloaded tissue that's never had a proper chance to recover.

Does Deep Tissue Massage Actually Help Back Pain?

Yes - but it depends on what's causing it and how far gone the tension is.

For the kind of back pain most tradespeople carry, deep tissue massage in Rotherham works well. The goal is to get into the deeper layers of muscle - the stuff that a light rub won't touch - and start breaking down the chronic tightness that's built up over time. Improved blood flow, reduced muscle guarding, better movement. Most people feel a meaningful difference within two or three sessions.

What it won't fix on its own is a structural issue like a disc problem or nerve compression. If you're getting shooting pain down your leg, pins and needles, or numbness, get that checked out first. I'll always be straight with you about what's in my scope and what isn't.

For the vast majority of tradesperson back pain though - tight, achy, stiff, sometimes sharp on movement - soft tissue work does a proper job.

What a Session Actually Looks Like

You're not coming in for a pamper. This is treatment-focused work.

I'll ask you about your trade, what your day looks like, where the pain is and when it's worst. That context matters. A roofer's back pain doesn't present the same way as a plumber's, and I want to know what your body is actually doing all day before I start working on it.

From there it's hands-on - slower, deeper pressure than you'd get in a relaxation massage, working through the layers to find where the tension is actually sitting. I work within your tolerance. Some of it will be uncomfortable. None of it should be unbearable.

Most sessions are 60 minutes. For people with more complex or longstanding tension, 90 minutes gives us more room to work properly. You can see the full range of what I offer on the treatments page.

How Often Should a Manual Worker Get Massage?

More often than most people think - but less often than you'd expect to need it if you start early.

For someone already in pain and carrying a significant backlog of tension, I'd usually suggest fortnightly for the first six to eight weeks. That frequency lets the tissue respond and change between sessions, rather than just releasing and tensing straight back up again. Once things settle down, monthly maintenance is usually enough to keep on top of it.

The tradespeople I've seen get the most out of this are the ones who treat it like servicing a van. You don't wait for the engine to seize. You keep on top of it.

If you're based in Rotherham or Sheffield and you're putting in long weeks on site, a regular session is genuinely worth building into the routine.

Can Massage Help Prevent Back Pain Coming Back?

Not permanently on its own - but it's one of the most useful tools in the kit.

The honest answer is that manual work will always create tension. That's not going to change. What changes is how quickly that tension compounds and how much it affects you day to day.

Regular soft tissue work keeps the muscles moving more freely, reduces the baseline of tension you're carrying into each week, and tends to mean that when you do get a flare-up, it's less severe and settles faster. Most of the tradespeople I see regularly have stopped losing days to back pain. That's not nothing - for a self-employed tradesperson, a day off is a day unpaid.

Combine it with some basic strengthening work - even 10 minutes of core work a few times a week - and you're in a much better position. I'll sometimes talk through what that looks like for your specific situation. You can find out more about how I work on the about page.

Worth the Drive

The clinic is in Treeton, about 10 minutes from Meadowhall, so it's straightforward to reach from across South Yorkshire. If you're finishing a job in Sheffield or knocking off in Rotherham, it's not out of your way.

A lot of tradespeople assume this sort of thing isn't for them - that it's more of a gym-goer or athlete thing. It isn't. The people doing the most physical work are often the ones who need this most and access it least.

If your back has been giving you grief and you've been putting off doing something about it, this is a good place to start.

Book a session and we'll get into it properly.
